Arbanasi – Only 4km from Veliko Tarnovo; this picturesque village perched overlooking Tsarevets is home to around 90 churches and Monasteries, including the beautifully frescoed Church of the Nativity. The village, rich in history is popular with Bulgarians and tourists alike. A perfect day trip can be made walking up to Arbanasi, several paths lead up from Veliko Tarnovo through picturesque countryside.
Preobrazhensk Monastery – 6km North of Veliko Tarnovo, the Monastery of Transfiguration is the 4th largest in Bulgaria. Situated high in the crags and surrounded by gorgeous woodland it commands a stunning view of the valley and encircling cliffs. Also a superb hike from Veliko Tarnovo, a well marked path leads you up and down through scenic woodland. Expect on taking 2-3 hours each way, to fully appreciate the walk.

Emen Canyon – 25km to the West of Veliko Tarnovo, the Emen Canyon nature reserve makes an ideal break from the city – boasting a huge variety of birds, bats, and butterflies, as well as a 10m high waterfall, it’s the perfect antidote to too many boozy nights in Veliko Tarnovo!
The Architectural and Ethnographical Complex Etar is situated in a picturesque region of the Balkan Mountains, just outside the town of Gabrovo, it stretches along the small mountain river of Sivek. The Bulgarian Renaissance atmosphere of the 19th century is recreated here through traditional workshops of Bulgarian art and crafts. The complex features over 20 different crafts including; woodcarving, bread baking, herb gathering, pottery, weaving, and many more. Craftsmen are at work here most of the day. There are 15 samples of houses with a workshop and a small shop on the ground floor and exhibition of museum items on the first floor.
Dryanovo Monastery – Around 25km south of Veliko Tarnovo you’ll find this delightful monastery situated under huge limestone cliffs. The area offers stunning terrain which can be explored on the Dryanovo eco trail which begins at the monastery and passes through scenic forests leading you to the 1.5km long Bacho Kiro Cave.
