Imperiously overlooking the city from its Eastern end, the ruined fortress of Tsarevets spreads majestically over an entire massif, while the town itself is peppered with churches and Bulgarian revival period homes. The densely forested hills that encircle Veliko Tarnovo are themselves haunted by ancient Monasteries lined with brightly painted frescos, as well as numerous villages that are ideal for day trips.

If sightseeing is not your thing, Veliko Tarnovo is also home to a University second only to Sofia’s, ensuring that all year round the city has a young and cosmopolitan feel. The main drag is lined with shops as well as myriad restaurants, bars and clubs. (All of which the hostel staff will be more than happy to show you round).
